Can I record in HD from the coax TV Out of my set top box?
Q. Clear QAM and OTA HD use coaxial cable (and are HD), but I've been told the coaxial TV Out on an HD set top box would not output in HD. I have a PCI HD tv tuner card that supports clear QAM and ATSC. Is it true that connecting the coax TV Out from the STB to the tuner card would not result in HD recordings? If so, is there a component-to-coax cable that will allow me to record in HD? It would be nice to record cable HD channels w/o renting the company's DVR.
Asked by kendire12b - Mon Oct 8 14:21:15 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, because set-top boxes don't output in HD on the coax output. To do so would raise the cost of the box, and would allow for "unsecure" digital signals to be captured and recorded (and then copied and shared), which is something the content providers are doing everything to prevent.

What would happen if a person connected the cable TV coax to a CB radio and transmitted on it ?
Q. fibs99: Would connecting an antenna tuner in line keep the SWR down ?
Asked by The Skipper - Fri May 23 09:30:30 2008 - - 3 Answers - 2 Comments

A. You could burn the final output transistors of the CB if you continue to transmit with any mismatched antenna system. (this qualifies) You might make some interference on sets within close proximity of the CB depending on how good the set (and coax cable) is filtered. This prompts the burning question . . . WHY?

Q. I have a TV with no coax port in the back, and i just installed basic cable that comes through a coax cable. is there any way to watch tv without renting a $10/ month cable box?

A. You don't have a TV, you have a monitor. You need a Tuner. If it is analog cable, a VCR will work just fine. Or any of the items below: set-top box, DVD recorder (with tuner), DVR.

A. TV Coax, sometimes known as low loss coax has a braided copper screen only. Satellite coax, also known as RG6 has a braided copper sheath and a foil sheath. Satellite coax is designed carry the much higher frequencies of the satellite signal.

How to connect a tv with a broken coax input?
Q. I have a huge television, but the coax got ripped out and I'm trying to find a way to connect it to a coax wall output that has cable. Is there something I can buy to make the transition into the tv? I have a ton of inputs on the back of it
Asked by cummazelba - Sun Apr 5 17:24:45 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You will need to purchase a device with a tuner capable of receiving and demodulating the signals sent on a cable service. Look for either a "Cable Receiver" or a DVD/VCR with a NTSC & QAM tuner (these are the modulation standards used by cable). Hook one of these devices to your TV through a Composite, S-Video, Component or HDMI A/V port. Remember that you will be using the tuner in the "Cable Receiver" or DVD/VCR, therefore, you will use the remote from this device to select your channels. A RF modulator will NOT work. It has no tuner and works in the opposite direction you need. A RF modulator takes Composite video in and modulates this signal on to channel 3 or 4 over a coax at its output. A DTV converter does not have the tuner… [cont.]

How do I convert basic cable coax to input to my HDTV without a coax input connection on the tv?
Q. The coax connector on the tv broke off. I need to plug the basic cable to the tv using other input connections, either HDMI or components or something.

A. The only way I know of to get basic cable into your TV is through the F connector you say is broken. If you have a cable box, then you would also have AV, HDMI, etc. to choose from.

Is there a difference between white or black coax used for satellite TV?
Q. The tech that installed my dish was adamant that the white cable was the only way to go for satellite TV. So much in fact that I began to doubt my belief that there is no difference other than the color of the cable. I can't find anything to back his argument up but I thought I would put it out here and see if anyone knew of any reason why the white coax is better than black coax in satellite TV (or any) installation. Thanks in advance, Bill
Asked by Bill - Fri Dec 18 12:05:08 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If both cables meet the same specs and are the same classification, such as RG-6 the color makes no difference. You can get coax in many colors, including red, green, violet, etc. The color doesn't make any difference except for durability. Black resists the sun's UV rays better than other colors. The white cover will deteriorate long before a black cover will.

Can I combine over the air signal and cable tv signal in one coax?
Q. I just hooked up my hdtv. I ran two coaxes one from my outside antenna for the hdtv signal, and one from the cable company which goes to the cable box and then to the tv via component cables.( I don't want to get hdtv from them as it's too expensive). My question is this: Could I have combined the two signals( in the attic for example) with a splitter and then separate them at the the tv with another splitter, thereby having to only run one coax. Do the signals operate at different frequencies to allow this? Thanks in advance for the help
Asked by bickle T - Thu Sep 6 20:33:57 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, you will need a switch to go back and forth between them. If you try to combine both signals, interference will cause you to have either bad reception, or no reception.

Does an HDMI cable replace the regular coax cable from receiver to TV?
Q. I'm going to wall mount a TV and I'm not sure how many ports or what ports I need in the wall to go from my receiver up to my TV. I guess a regular coax cable comes in from the satellite to the receiver but do I need one going out or can the HDMI replace that and audio to my stereo?
Asked by homer simpson - Fri Oct 19 16:45:49 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You should connect your Sat box to the outside with Coax. Then from your Sat box to your receiver can be one of many types. Likely you are running a set of component cables (3 thick cables with color coded connectors of red, blue and green) for video and then a digital audio cable as well. This is likely a single RCA or a optical cable. You could then connect to your TV using a single HDMI, provided your receiver has HDMI out, and has a function called up-converting. If your equipment is all new enough, the simplest would be to just run HDMI from sat box to receiver, and another one from receiver to TV. Good, luck, the permutations on your question are nearly endless. Try posting with a list of the exact models and someone might… [cont.]

How can I convert from a COAX audio out on my TV to headphones RCA jack? TV has no other audio out options.?

Splitting Verizon fios coax cable for TV and internet?
Q. Hello, I have current have the verizon fios router in my room that takes up my coax connection. I recently ordered a box to watch TV in my room. Is there a way to split to coax so I can have the router running and TV off of one coax connection? Will there be any signal loss? Thanks
Asked by Christropher Brando - Tue Jun 23 18:18:30 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You will be fine. Just go to your local hardware/computer store and ask for a 2 way splitter. Don't forget to get the extra coax wires to go from the splitter to the stb (set top box), tv (depending how you will connect the stb to the tv) and router. there will be no problem w/ signal loss. When your STB comes in you will hook it up like this. Coax from wall into "in" on splitter. Take the new coax you got and put them into both of the "out" side of the splitter. One coax into the router, the other into the stb. The router will be all set. Now from the stb to the tv, that will all depend on how you want to connect it and what type of box you are getting. If you need further info, I will be glad to help you

A. Not with that. You need an RF convertor to change the full-spectrum video and sound signals into discrete composite video and left-right audio. Then you should be able to proceed as planned.

My TV has no coax connector because it was damaged in a move. No screws for an antenna. Can I hook one up?
Q. It's a standard def 38" without a digital tuner. I was thinking of picking up an external digital converter and antenna to pick up local stations. Should I then run the signal through a dvd/vcr to get the component video, or do some digital converters have a component, s-video or something other than a coax output?

I am trying to find a modulator. I have satellite coax output to my TV and need RCA Jacks for my receiver?
Q. I have a new home trhater system that does not hae a coax satellite input. I need to find a modulator that can split the coax into 3 rca jacks (or at least 2 jacks for audio). This will then connect to the input on my receiver and allow me to get surround sound while watching TV. Does anyone know of a store or business in the US that sells this? I have been to several major stores with no luck: FRY's, Radio Shack, Circuit City and BEST BUY.
Asked by Daves Dilemma - Tue Jul 17 17:56:25 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That wont be surround sound. At best you will get pro logic with that kind of connection. Or use your TVs audio outs to connect to the receiver for pro logic. Upgrade the sat receiver to one that have dolby digital outs and connect an optical cable between the two.

Is it better to connect a digital cable box directly to a TV via RCA plugs rather than one coax cable?
Q. If I connect a digital cable box directly to a TV via RCA (yellow, red, white) plugs rather than via the coax cable, does it make a difference in picture or sound?
Asked by stick9999.geo - Tue Jun 23 10:29:18 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is always better to send video (yellow) than RF (coax). The cable box is already decoding the signal sent over the wire. If you connect the TV with coax, the box has to re-encode to RF to go on channel 3 or 4 and then the TV is re-decoding it. The less signal processing, the better your picture will be. If you have a better video output from the cable box which is compatible with your TV (S-video, component, or HDMI), that will give you even a better picture. Coaxial cable is always the worst.

Asked by hikingguyla - Mon Dec 29 17:42:55 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You would need an external digital TV tuner that has an HDMI output. There aren't a lot of choices. The two I know of are: - Samsung DTB-H260F external tuner, about $160 - The TiVo HD unit, which has dual digital tuners. Its about $250 new, but TiVo has refurbished ones for $180. I just bought one and am very happy with it. However, it does have a monthly subscription price of $13. It doesn't seem like it would be that expensive to have someone thread a coax line up the wall. Probably cheaper than either of the two above options.
