Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. Nielsen ratings are audience measurement systems developed by Nielsen Media Research, in an effort to determine the audience size and composition of television programming in the United States. Nielsen Media Research was founded by Arthur Nielsen, who was a market analyst whose career had begun in the 1920s with brand advertising analysis and expanded into radio market analysis during the 1930s, culminating in Nielsen ratings of radio programming, which was meant to provide statistics as to the markets of radio shows. In 1950, Nielsen moved to television, developing a ratings system using the methods he and his company had developed for radio. That method has since become the primary source of audience measurement information in the television industry around the world. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How does the Nielsen Ratings get information about demographics? Q. I'm really not sure how the whole thing works, but what I am interested in knowing is how it is data on demographics are gathered. They can't possibly know who is sitting behind every television set? Asked by Faraway - Mon Feb 2 14:09:04 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. They give their survey panels a box that record what they watch on TV, and they get the demographic information of the households in their panels. Hence they are able to figure out the demographics of their sample. Whether the numbers are actually accurate, of course, is debatable. Asked by AmericanOil24 - Sun Jan 24 02:11:00 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments What's the math behind Nielsen ratings?
Q. I know how the data is collected. But how exactly is the math added up? What would 2.6/11 mean for a show on Cartoon Network? Is it good? Just what do these numbers mean? Asked by Dark - Sun May 10 11:44:50 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Nielson gives a lot of statistics showing a lot of different things about a particular show - but I'm assuming the 2.6/11 is the ratings/share numbers. This means: 2.6% of all people participating in the Nielson study watched that show. While 11% of those people who actually had their TV sets turned on at that time were watching that program. That's a pretty good rating for a cable program. Answered by Jigi - Sun May 10 13:08:58 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "nielsen ratings" Islanders TV ratings up 100%
