How come Egyptian soap operas are people sitting in a circle gossiping?
Q. Why don't they have soap operas like in America where it is like a regular tv show?
Asked by am - Wed Feb 20 17:13:58 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Egyptian soap operas are the ones where you have the very busty woman with too much make up on overacting her heart out to the token blonde younger woman. The story line can be anything you like and just goes round in circles and even if you don't watch it for 6 months you will be able to pick up exactly where you left it. They are bizarre!

How do I get my grandmother to stop watching Indian soap operas?
Q. My grandmother is very addicted to watching Indian soap operas to the point where it spans over a time period of 5 hours. What are some ways to stop that addiction?

A. This is a cute question! Invite her out with you to do something she would like. She'd probably enjoy spending time with you. Really, though, grandmothers earn the right to do whatever they want, which includes watching the shows they enjoy for five hours a day. It could be worse. She could be obsessed with Twilight! :0

A. 1st you need a wealthy upstanding family to be the heroes of the story. The women must be beautiful & catty. They will be kidnapped & held for ransom, raped at least once if not more, they will have children & NEVER know which man fathered them, they will marry one man even though they are totally truly madly deeply in love with someone else. They will be praised for their kind hearts intelligence & inner strength despite being vain shallow head cases. You need all the female archetypes, the virgin, the bitch, the ingenue, the vixen. etc. Then you need the rich powerful villain family with a grudge against the hero family. Soaps are all the same, they've gotten worse but they haven't really changed. Just remember, they never give… [cont.]

How did soap operas change/ develop due to 1960's pop culture?
Q. I've got a few points: First, soap operas were intorduced which was a new thing. Over the years, the storylines have become more pronounced. Do you think the 60's had a positive or negative effect in terms of soap operas?? Many thanks in advance.

A. you do know that soap operas actually started in the 30's on Radio and not in the 60's right? the first soap on usa tv was "The First Hundred Years" in 1950 and it ran for 2 yrs. What changes to soap were more made in the early 1970's - in All my children subjects like the Viet Nam war and abortion were raised and the "issue" storyline came into being- many were used throughout the 1980-90's- breast cancer/HIV/Aids etc.

Why do soap operas look different than any other tv shows?
Q. I can tell if a show is a soap opera just by glancing at the cinematography. What is that they do different? It seems to be true for all soap operas. Any ideas?
Asked by POPPA TART - Wed Feb 11 20:03:06 2009 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments

A. "The visual quality of a soap opera is usually lower than prime time television shows due to the lower budgets and quicker production times involved. This is also because soap operas are recorded on videotape using a multicamera setup, unlike primetime productions which are usually shot on film."

Why mid-day soap operas are in such low production value?
Q. Is there reason why soap operas look that bad every time? Take HEROES for example, the lighting and production value almost looks like a movie. Why can't other dramas look like that? Lighting is always too bright on the set, revealing the cheap material surfaces on the walls and furniture. They often sounds bad and the acting is overdone and horrible.

How do soap operas film so often?
Q. From what I've heard, a sitcom that airs once a week for 30 minutes takes an entire work week (Mon-Fri) to film. If that's true, how do soap operas that air 5 days a week, 1 hour each day, have enough time to do all that filming?! I can understand sitcoms, especially since they are seasonal (air from Sept-Dec, Jan-May, don't film during the summer), but soaps air all year long! Will someone please tell me how this works?
Asked by Jamie Ann - Sun Feb 22 03:22:24 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Soap actors sometimes work 12-16 hours a day and each character isn't in every scene. They have a lot of characters on each soap. Whereas on a sitcom, the same actors are in just about every scene.

How come characters from soap operas never have to use the bathroom?
Q. I watch Passions and occasionally look at Days of Our Lives and Bold and the Beautiful and have wondered this. If soap operas are supposed to be life-like, then it should show characters using the bathroom.
Asked by Breezy_Bre - Wed Oct 11 05:41:07 2006 - - 14 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Maybe because going to the bathroom is so everydayish, that the script writers probably think that it's not needed. But I agree a character could say they need to go to the toilet to freshen up.

Q. basically, im doing an essay for media on why is the hijab absent in soap operas. I cant really write much becuase it turns into a more socialological essay when i write it and not media based. So what are the reasons behind the absentisim in soap operas?
Asked by chocolategirl - Sun Mar 15 14:43:57 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm not sure about in European or Middle Eastern Countries, but in American Soaps their is a definete absences of many different cultures. I think US soaps are just beginning to scratch the surface espeically when it comes to Muslim cultures and traditions. I guess the reasons could be because soaps don't want to offend anyone, they may not want to disrespect the culture, or just don't have storylines that would support a character...at the moment.

Q. I've seen this alot, you might mention something about a soap, right, and they might make some comment like how stupid they are, and all of a sudden it slips---they know what's going on on the soap.

A. Many more folk than want to admit, watch the soap operas. What's wrong with that? No one is free of some addiction or other. It certainly beats drugs, murders, improper behaviors, etc. Why not enjoy the programming and perhaps even read a few of the old classics? I personally read a lot of good books from the library. Sometimes I sit in there and read them. Other times, I check the books out. Furthermore, I sometimes order the books from amazon.com or go to Border's here in Chicago. Congratulations to those who love their soap operas. They are peaceful, entertaining and make the heart happy (at least, most of the time). I would suggest these scriptures as follows: What shall we then say to these things? If GOD be for us, WHO can be… [cont.]

What drinks do they use on soap operas?
Q. Like, do they use sparkling cider to look like it is champagne? What are the "alcoholic" drinks that they use on the shows? Do they use malt beer on the soaps? Is it allowed on the soaps to use real alcohol or is it against the rules? What do they substitute for drinks to make it look like beer and wine?
Asked by Sarah C - Sat Dec 30 02:31:37 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am sure they use soft drinks in place of the alcohol. Did you know that weak ice tea can look similar to many mixed drinks or even straight shots? Apple juice with seltzer water or club soda could be a beer. That is how they do it. The alcohol rules a long time ago concerning TV were stricter than they are today. I remember when you couldn't drink alcohol on TV even to toast someone. They have loosened these laws a lot since then. Shoot, even Martha Stewart drinks on her show.

How are CBS soap operas shot?
Q. The CBS soap operas seem to be shot differently than those on other networks. They almost have a "live" quality to them, strange shadows, different sound quality. This is particularly true of the one that comes on at 2:00 eastern time. I wouldn't THINK it was live. But why does it look that way?

A. Go to this link to see how CBS is shooting both GL and my fav ATWT. As the World Turns is the show that is on @ 2 that you were writing about.

A. Hey there, I am no expert on this but I will tell you what I think. 1. They both have story lines 2. They both use sexual tension 3. Contrast- guys feel like they can watch wrestling without it being demasculated. 4. ratings are important for both. 5. The stars can go on to have commercial success 6. Contrast- alot more stunts, more accidents, and long time health issues are assoicated with wrestling 7. They both use villains at the catalyst for their strories.
