Nielsen ratings are audience measurement systems developed by Nielsen Media Research, in an effort to determine the audience size and composition of television programming in the United States. Nielsen Media Research was founded by Arthur Nielsen, who was a market analyst whose career had begun in the 1920s with brand advertising analysis and expanded into radio market analysis during the 1930s, culminating in Nielsen ratings of radio programming, which was meant to provide statistics as to the markets of radio shows. In 1950, Nielsen moved to television, developing a ratings system using the methods he and his company had developed for radio. That method has since become the primary source of audience measurement information in the television industry around the world.

Can someone explain Nielsen ratings to me in a simple way?
Q. Just curious. I really don't get all that "share", "rating" stuff. If a show got a 10/7 share, what does that mean? Is that good or bad? I've tried looking at the internet for a basic, precise explanation, but I can't find anything that put it simply enough. If anyone can help me out, I'm really just curious... Thanks! guaranteed 10 points if your answer is the "full-est" simple one. (chosen by me) =D

A. Well, the Nielsen ratings are only based on a sample of the population, the people who have the Neilsen boxes. Check this website out: From Nielsen Media: " What is a rating and a share? The terms rating and share are basic to the television industry. Both are expressed as percentages. Simply put, a rating tells how many people watched a particular TV program; it is the percent of households or persons within a universe (all TV households, or adults 18-49, for example) who are tuned to a particular program or daypart. A share expresses this same number of viewers as a percent of only the households or persons actually watching television during the program or daypart. Thus, a share is a percent of a constantly changing number the… [cont.]

How are "Primetime Nielsen Ratings" determined and how do tv critics know which shows people are watching?
Q. How do tv critics determine "winners" and "losers" on any given night.

A. Neilson Ratings monitor viewership from selected households via a unit they attach to the television set or cable set-top box that records what channels you watch and when you watch them. The information is either sent via broadband (if the customer has a connection) or through a paper trail, where the household records on paper what they watch and when. Neilson matches the dates, time, and channel to the programming on that channel and when it was aired. This is the number we get in the Neilson Ratings reports we read. We can't ask to be a Neilson viewer. Neilson randomly selects households. If households don't mind their viewing habits being monitored, they receive the monitor unit to connect to their television sets.
